Description:
Live Tilapia for Aquaponics in the Uk
We supply Nile Tilapia fingerlings (Oreochromis Niloticus) in the UK as part of our quest to spread aquaponics. This is because we believe in the potential for aquaponics to create a more resiliant, eco-friendly and healthy food supply.
We concentrate on breeding fish in as natural a way as possible, without hybridisation, in-breeding, hormonal or chemical treatments of any kind.
Our aim is to supply to the full range of customers from small home-based systems to larger ventures.
Please call us for the pricing and contact us if you're interested in ordering. We will reply and let you know when your request can be fulfilled.
Aquaponics
Aquaponics is the use of an artificial ecosystem to produce extremely high productivity. The main advantage is the efficient use of water and minimal amount of inputs required.
Aquaponics Cycle
The system is a merging of aquaculture (growing fish) and hydroponics (growing plants in water). This means using very little soil and creating a closed cycle so that water is pumped around the system transporting nutrients.
Of course, this does not help to create habitat for wildlife in the way permaculture does, but it does hold the possibility of growing food inside cities (vastly reducing food miles), in deserts or virtually anywhere. This technology literally has the potential to end world hunger while causing virtually zero environmental damage.
We are designing aquaponics systems with the eventual aim of being able to make them low-cost and easily transportable so that they can one day be set up around the world.
Why Nile Tilapia?
Whilst this fish is relatively new to the UK and has only recently become available in supermarkets, it has actually been cultivated since ancient Egyptian times and is the most commonly farmed species in the world.
Tilapia are an incredibly tough, fresh water species with a very high growth rate - making them highly suitable for aquaponics. In optimal conditions they can achieve marketable size within 6 months (although in practice it will probably take longer than this). They are also fast breeding and naturally live at high stocking densities.
Lastly, and very importantly, Tilapia are a vegetarian fish - meaning it is possible to supply them with feed without needing wild caught fish meal. In most fish farming, it takes 10kg of wild caught fish, ground up, to produce 1kg of farmed fish. This is simply not sustainable.
The main down side for Tilapia is there requirement to have warm water of 28 centigrade. However, if one compares the growth rate of native UK species, such as Common Carp (which requires around 3 years to reach maturity), the gain in productivity is incredible.
Any sizes are available welcome to come and see by appointment only, over 5,000 will need advance notice.
Collection is the best but can be delivered with mutual agreement
